What does a first session with you look like?

In private practice, we work in phases: I/we get to know you, we identify 1-2 pressing issues, work on those for several weeks, let you try out some changes in your approach, then come back a few months later if you would like to explore the results and/or focus on a new topic. That kind of “intermittent reinforcement” helps clients remain both accountable to their goals and motivated to move towards a deep and genuine experience of the world from a new perspective. Re: managing psychiatric concerns, there IS life after diagnosis! I work with clients and families to help them understand the full spectrum experience of psychiatric hospitalization (before, during and after), and to maximize treatment value of various levels of care (IP/RTC/Detox, PHP, IOP, OP.)

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I currently work with individuals, combining Solution-Focused and Narrative approaches with elements of DBT, CBT, Socratic questioning and Stoicism, to create tailored, realistic/attainable, sustainable goals and to work towards change. When indicated and with consent, I refer to/discuss cases with medical doctors (psychiatrists and/or primary care physicians) for consideration of medication. I am formally trained in EMDR and will begin pursuing certification later this year. In addition to being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have a Master’s Degree in Music; while I do not provide Music Therapy per se, I find that using music in a session can promote both engagement and comfort in what can be an intense process.
