What does a first session with you look like?
My initial session with you will be an information gathering that focuses on your history including your family, collecting pertinent information about mental health disorders and treatments and the reasons that brought you into therapy. Typically, these sessions tend to run between 50 to 60 minutes. This allows me to gather information that has impacted you as well as historical information to assist me with conceptualizing your treatment plan. After the initial intake, I will be working with what is brought into each session and the information that you provided in our initial session. Sessions last 45 to 50 minutes and are on a weekly basis. In the beginning we will build a relationship and increase your coping skills through building on what you have and new skills to assist you.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I approach therapy from a body positive, LGBTQ affirming, culturally aware perspective of therapy. I work from the model dialectical behavioral therapy commonly known as DBT. It is a mindfulness, skill building evidence-based method of therapy that helps with reducing distress, increasing coping mechanisms, and building new life skills to increase happiness and satisfaction. We will work on increasing breathing techniques and increasing your internal coping mechanisms which will assist with helping reduce the internal distress that is often experienced with mental health struggles. Additionally, I utilize a technique of brainspotting. This is a trauma therapy technique that assists with reducing unprocessed, or trauma that is difficult to work through using traditional methods.
