What does a first session with you look like?

I am a solution focused therapist so my work is based on how it assists you in identifying and moving you toward your goals. In relationships, sometimes it becomes challenging to navigate where we are at as a person and in our relationships. My focus in relationship focused/couples counseling is to help you identify and speak about your current experience and then to facilitate a place in which each partner can hear each other. The work can begin grounded in concrete tasks, exercises and assignments. This translates with practice into greater depth, option and flexibility as each partner gains self awareness and an increased understanding of the impact on the other.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I am a graduate of New College of California, one of the first clinical training programs in the country to hold gender and sexual orientation as central to our mission. Services must be offered in a relevant and meaningful way and the onus of this is on the clinician. I am all too aware of the increased mental health concerns presented in the GLBT community as a result of factors external to the person in treatment. I am also well aware of the healing effects of treating people with respect , and with welcoming uniqueness in expression and experience. Many years ago I supervised a clinician as he was transitioning and it was a true learning experience to work with his own decisions around what he shared with his clients and his own process personally and clinically.
