What does a first session with you look like?

We all face difficulties in life, whether it be with family, romantic relationships, self-esteem, career, decision-making, loss, or completely unforeseen circumstances. As your mental health counselor, I will offer individualized support to help you navigate these challenges. If you so choose, I can incorporate the Christian faith perspective into your counseling experience as well.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) explores how a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are related. After working with clients to uncover unhealthy thinking patterns causing self-destructive beliefs and behaviors, I practice techniques to help replace these with newer, healthier thinking patterns that will lead to more realistic and positive beliefs and productive behaviors. Dialectical Behavior Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) assists clients in thinking dialectically. Dialectical thinking is essentially recognizing that two opposing ideas can co-exist and be valid at the same time. In the context of DBT, the two opposing ideas are that our “Rational Mind” and our “Emotional Mind” are both valid and useful to us. In the DBT approach, I focus on applying this thinking to interpersonal relationships, managing stressful situations, regulating mood, and staying present. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines cognitive behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies to help clients see themselves as separate from their thoughts and moods. This disconnect allows clients to become liberated from negative thought patterns and achieve relief from distressful Motivational Interviewing Motivational Interviewing (MI) helps clients resolve ambivalence or insecurities and find the motivation needed for behavior change. MI acknowledges that making life changes can be extremely difficult. It is a practical, empathetic, short-term process. Person-Centered Therapy Person-Centered Therapy (PCT) allows clients to direct their course of therapy. My goal is to understand the client as completely as possible and offer support to encourage them to talk out their problems and come to their own conclusions.
