What does a first session with you look like?

I want you to be heard and seen and to have your feelings validated. What is causing you suffering? Where are you and where would you like to be? Let’s make a plan together! I will support and challenge you to explore and examine conflicts in yourself, your life, and your relationships. In sessions, you will learn positive coping skills to manage your day to day experiences and we will set intentions for using these skills in between sessions. My hopes and intentions for our work together is that you will get significant relief from whatever has been causing you distress, you will improve your relationships with yourself and others, and that you will build a life which is fulfilling and meaningful to you.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) uses many cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, including present moment awareness/mindfulness , committed action/behavioral activation, and challenging unhelpful thoughts, to promote psychological flexibility to manage difficult feelings and experiences. A big part of acceptance and commitment therapy is also clarifying personal core values and aligning our day to day lives with our values in order to alleviate suffering and to build a fulfilling and meaningful life. I also find that DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) techniques and skills are very helpful. These include mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness (our ability to interact and communicate effectively with others).
