What does a first session with you look like?
Our first 2-3 sessions are a lot of "getting to know" each other; I will provide initial tools and insight to start our work together; however, I also know early on, developing the foundation and trust of our therapeutic alliance is crucial. After these first few sessions, my goal is for you to take a fresh perspective and new insight to provide motivation and a grounding focus to carry you through to our next session. I will also provide you with various tools and strategies to keep in your “toolbox” to help maintain your motivation and focus between our meetings. Each follow-up will include processing how you used your tools (I’m not going to allow you to throw them on a shelf to collect dust and end up covered in rust) along with any barriers you may have experienced in applying what you have learned. We will then go back to our playbook, reevaluate, and adjust, as needed.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
The evidence-based treatment approaches I use strategies from most include Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Motivational Interviewing, Impact Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Reality/Choice Therapy, Art/Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and others. This does not mean I am registered nor certified in all these approaches; however, I have engaged in extensive training to use the strategies I employ from these various approaches. So, what does this all mean? I approach therapy as one person providing support and insight to another person. We take a look into how our thought and behavior patterns, which were helpful in the past, have now led to more distress than comfort. We learn to identify triggers and their connection to physical responses, use coping skills that help reduce these responses, and adopt healthier thoughts and behaviors that decrease our emotional distress and negative consequences. We learn to experience uncomfortable situations and feelings without judgment and recognize the ebb and flow of these emotions so we can learn to respond rather than react.
