What does a first session with you look like?
From the outset of treatment, I strive to motivate my clients-to teach them tangible mental health skills that will allow them to begin taking control of their recoveries. Anxiety influences daily living so heavily these days; as such, I show clients how to utilize such evidence-based techniques as bilateral stimulation, mindfulness, and breathwork so that they can immediately battle this malicious force. As therapeutic trust grows, I endeavor to help them explore underlying factors which are likely contributing to their outward difficulties, factors such as posttraumatic stress, mood dysregulation, and the lingering effects of abuse. I do so while honoring the experience and self-knowledge that my clients bring to treatment, as well as their right to self-direction.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I utilize a blend of evidence-based treatment methods that's designed to address the typically complex needs of my clients. For example: While I frequently use behavioral therapies, such as cognitive (CBT) and dialectical (DBT), to help clients overcome thinking distortions and patterns of self-sabotage, I also employ motivational interviewing to help them initiate change. Another example: While treating clients who are struggling with intrusive, racing thoughts, I may use 12-Step methods to help relieve them of resentments and regrets, while also engaging them in somatic experiencing techniques to improve their tolerance of distress. My primary objective in all treatment is to tailor the intervention to the individual whom I'm serving.
