What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. My 30+ years in clinical practice, combined with lessons learned through parenting my now adult children has shaped the way I engage in the sacred and playful art of pediatric psychotherapy. I currently only serve clients 5 to 13 years of age.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Debra Honig, MSW, LCSW, is a well-seasoned, enthusiastic, and authentic pediatric psychotherapist. She has practiced in many settings in the Chicago area, with a focus on children and their families. Debra uses humor, empathy, and creativity to help children and their families to navigate life's expected and unexpected challenges. Debra uses an eclectic and warm style and focuses on the client's strengths and uniqueness. Debra offers specialization in the areas of self-esteem, ADHD, coping with illness and life transitions, divorce, grief, loss, anxiety, and mood disorders. Her treatment room is always inviting for children, including art material, action figures, puppets, and games. Debra completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree at the Jane Addams College of Social Work, a college of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her professional experience and training are further strengthened through personal experiences as an adoptive mom, stepmom, and foster parent. Debra utilizes an eclectic treatment approach incorporating expressive therapies, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and solution-focused brief therapy. Debra's philosophy is that everyone has roses and thorns from day to day. When it happens, it is important to talk about it, and use our coping strategies. That is the center of her work and helps create a safe and comfortable space for sharing and growth. Debra currently only serves clients 5to 13 years of age.
