What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. As a person of multicultural identity, a veteran, husband, father, and grandfather with 30 years of healthcare experience and personal recovery, I have a global perspective and a wealth of experience, strength and hope to assist my clients in meeting life's challenges.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Edwin is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with more than 30 years of healthcare experience working extensively with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and personal loss and trauma using therapeutic interventions alone or in combination with medications as needed. Edwin originally graduated from one of the last hospital-based nursing programs in North America under the tutelage of the Order of Grey Nuns. His Bachelor's and Master's studies at Lubbock Christian University focused on peer advocacy in dealing with mental health and substance use disorders. He was chosen to be part of the first cohort of 10 students admitted to Texas Tech University's post master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program. He practices transcultural nursing and incorporates cultural sensitivity into all his treatment strategies. Edwin employs trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TFCBT), motivational interviewing, and spiritually based techniques in developing individualized, recovery-oriented treatment plans. He is personally committed to lifelong personal growth to exemplify the wellness he wishes for others. He is an educator, mentor, and supportive advocate to his clients and colleagues and is always keen to share his knowledge, strength, and hope. Edwin recognizes from his own personal journey life uniquely challenges each of us. He knows there are times when we are all overwhelmed with our personal struggles and relationship challenges and we need guidance and support to find balance and direction.
