In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?

As a client-centered therapist, I believe in promoting genuineness in my work, which includes my sense of self. This means that I'm not afraid to show my personality, and I incorporate my sense of humor, personal experiences and my values into my work. I'm not a fan of the "blank slate" therapist that does not show any feeling or emotion. Instead, I have found that being my authentic self helps me to connect better with clients and build trusting relationships.

If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?

Trust in the process, and recognize that change doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to build a relationship with your therapist, and it's absolutely okay if you are nervous or have trouble opening up at first (almost everyone does). Also, finding the right type of therapist is essential, so try not to feel discouraged if the first person you work with isn't the right fit for you. It will be worth your effort when you find a therapist that you feel comfortable with.

What’s the most profound, insightful, or interesting thing you’ve learned as a mental health professional?

The best piece of advice I ever received from a colleague was this: manage your energy, not your time. Too often we feel pressured to take on extra responsibilities because we have time in our schedules. However, more often than not, this leads to burnout. Just because you can do something doesn't meant that you have to. I have seen clients find great success in learning how to manage their energy instead of their time. If you don't have the mental or physical energy to do something, that is okay. You'll thank yourself later for saying no.
