What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa but I earned my nursing degree in Charlotte, NC. I am currently a dual certified Family Nurse and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the state of North Carolina. I have over 16+ years of both acute care and public nursing experience. As aforementioned I was raised in Ghana, where many things are reserved for the wealthy, this includes education, mental health, and healthcare. In many cases, a preventable illness becomes an epidemic due to lack of better understanding of one's medical diagnosis and treatment course. In some cases, poor communication is to be blamed but often the case is the underprivileged are purposefully under treated. This experience fueled my desire for healthcare when I got the opportunity. Today's healthcare professionals are seeing a growing number of patients with diverse cultural backgrounds, and understanding their particular needs is crucial in reducing disparities which adversely increases patient satisfaction.
