Under Clinical Supervision

Emily Cruz, Licensed Master Social Worker, 116911 is practicing under the supervision of Samantha Vasquez (New York, LCSW, 086848-1) at Resilience Lab.

Please, note: A clinician listed as being “clinically supervised” is completing clinical hours toward their licensure. They have one or more fully licensed clinical supervisors that often have special training to become supervisors. They consult with their supervisor(s) on all of their cases, which means that, when working with them, you are getting the time and expertise of multiple therapists in your treatment.

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

Growing up, I experienced stigma around receiving mental health care. It was so extreme that it prevented me from getting the help I needed as a child and adolescent. This personal experience led me to my path of becoming a therapist. I wanted to break this cycle for my family and anyone struggling to reach out for support. I want people to feel comfortable asking for help, leaning into vulnerability, and setting boundaries with their loved ones. It's never too late to experience the transformative power of therapy and heal as an adult.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

My goal for you is to lead a confident, content, and autonomous life. That starts in therapy. From the first session, I’ll connect you with the nurturing parts of yourself that guide you through difficult situations. By providing an open, validating space to express yourself, I amplify rather than override the unique wisdom you bring to therapy.

What are your biggest strengths as a therapist?

Whether in-person or online, I create a comfortable environment for each client. I have a knack for little changes and actions that can help my clients feel relaxed and safe. I practice active and reflective listening. All therapists are good listeners, but I believe there is special power in reflecting a clients’ words back to them that empowers the client to discover new insights and make breakthroughs. I have a warm, calm, and grounding presence. My clients often share that the way I bring myself to our sessions helps them feel calmer and more centered.

LMSW, Master of Social Work, Columbia University, 2022

Work History

I began my career in mental health at the Center for Children and Families, where I had the privilege of supporting children with anxiety and selective mutism. I have worked in several other settings since then, but my favorite was the Center for Prolonged Grief. I feel a sense of calling when it comes to supporting individuals who are navigating the exhausting journey of grief and loss. I’m now a proud member of the Resilience Lab mental health collective—the largest community of clinicians working collaboratively to improve mental health access and outcomes.
