What is your style/approach to therapy?

Are you struggling to cope with a new medical diagnosis or chronic health concern? Do you feel stuck, exhausted, and overwhelmed? Are you longing to live a life with a sense of meaning, purpose, and vitality? If so, you are not alone. Health challenges can often affect many important aspects of our lives, including our mood, quality of life, and ability to engage in activities that matter most to us. I am passionate about helping adults to cope with physical health concerns and improve their overall quality of life. I use evidence-based and effective strategies to manage emotional distress resulting from having health challenges; address physical symptoms such as pain, poor sleep, and fatigue; and optimize your quality of life. I am passionate about tailoring treatment to each individual client’s unique needs, goals, and strengths. I very much value building a collaborative relationship with each client and providing a safe and warm environment to foster behavioral changes. It is also important to me to provide therapy that is inclusive and accessible for clients with disabilities. Similarly, I strive to practice cultural humility in my work and aim to be sensitive to issues of diversity and identity. Finally, I enjoy collaborating and consulting with other members of a client’s healthcare team to help best coordinate their care and treatment plan.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

My overall goal as a psychologist is to help you relate to your thoughts and emotions in a skillful way and to create a more meaningful and vital life that is in line with your values. I primarily integrate mindfulness- and acceptance-based therapies, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy into my clinical approach. I also incorporate self-compassion interventions into my work. Furthermore, I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a gold standard treatment for chronic insomnia. Additionally, I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) and treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, such as Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy. As a health psychologist, I am attuned to the intricate interconnection between our mind and body and aim to provide you with practical skills to manage physical symptoms as well as emotional distress that accompany health challenges. I also support you in making lifestyle modifications and habits to reach your health goals as well as with navigating the healthcare system. I have experience working with individuals with health challenges across the age span, from young adults to older adults.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

I am also passionate about working with individuals with serious and life-limiting illnesses, such as cancer and end-stage organ diseases. Through my postdoctoral fellowship, I worked closely with the Palliative Care team at the hospital where I completed my fellowship and gained meaningful experience supporting individuals at the end of their lives. I utilize interventions such as Dignity Therapy and Life Review.

Work History

I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. I completed my pre-doctoral internship in the Adult Health track at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. During my internship, I worked with adults with a range of health concerns, such as cancer, cardiac and pulmonary diseases, insomnia and other types of sleep-wake disorders, chronic pain, and traumatic perinatal and postpartum experiences. I then completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. Most of my fellowship focused on working with adult patients who were hospitalized due to acute or chronic medical concerns, ranging from neurocognitive disorders (e.g., strokes), cardiac and pulmonary diseases, traumatic injuries, burns, end-stage organ diseases, and cancer. While on fellowship, I also obtained further training in working with patients with cancer through a minor rotation in an outpatient cancer clinic.
