What does a first session with you look like?

First of all, I am a good listener and am very engaged in the counseling session. I have a very common sense approach, that is simple to understand. I use language that is easy to understand and will usually give someone a different perspective on what they are going through. With couples, I will avoid taking sides, and I will give simple and common sense tools to help improve communication and help de-escalate intense situations. With regard to homework, I will usually recommend some simple things to do and practice, that will help facilitate what I am trying to do in the sessions. Clients have to remember that the real work is day to day and not just during the time that we spend together. Your goals are my goals.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I utilize a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Counseling and Person Centered Counseling. I will make things easy to understand during our sessions and will also give homework that will work to address the areas of concern. This likely will include things such as journaling, but I will explain why the homework is being given, and how it will benefit the individual. With couples, I will spend time understanding what the dynamics are and then provide tools to help facilitate things such as communication, listening, and addressing things in a calm and productive way.
