What does a first session with you look like?

The first session is our opportunity for us to get to know one another. I learn about the goals you'd like to work on and any identified problem areas to target. As a prospective client, you get to gather my therapeutic style, ask general questions about the plan of action we'll take to help you reach your goals. We do this by gathering a through assessment which includes asking you questions about family history, personal experiences of trauma, past and current coping strategies, and current stressors. Think of it as a conversation to share your thoughts and life experiences with me. At the end of the first session, we'll discuss a recommended frequency for therapy and first therapeutic steps to get fully started.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I come from a perspective of Bowen Family Systems to explore trans-generational patterns and use Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance Commitment Therapy principles to address negative core beliefs and stinking thinking that keep people stuck in unhealthy cycles of trauma, addiction, toxic relationships, etc. CBT and ACT also provide practical tools such as mindfulness, challenging negative self-talk, to build healthy coping. In working with couples and families, I like to add-on Emotionally Focused therapy to build empathy and emotional connection among participants.
