What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I realized that my own family was a source of great comfort and strength to me on my life journey. As I look back on my family of origin, we had our struggles with communication and serious life events. When I was a kid I remember times when my family needed help, but there was no one to support us. I wanted to become that person families could turn to when times got hard.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I like to tailor my approach to the specific needs of my client(s). I start by identifying the problem, then consider the human systems that are effected by the problem, and select a treatment plan that is most likely to achieve my clients' goals. I look for client strengths, then look for ways to nurture resilience, adaptation, and self-care. Family members are seen individually or together as needed based on a careful treatment plan and input from each person.
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
My clients have noted that I am highly structured but flexible. There is a plan for each session, but the client always has the freedom to talk about what is most important to them.
