Clients can expect to establish goals for themselves. Establishing goals is at the foundation of all therapy. All of the session activities and intersession assignments are designed to develop the strategies and plans to achieve those goals. Activities will include a comprehensive history of the client’s life from a social, psychological, and biological perspective. There will be evaluations and surveys to determine the client’s basic outlook on life and what they consider to be a fulfilling and rewarding life. Past attempts to achieve goals will be discussed to determine what has worked and not worked so that new strategies and actions can bring about the desired change. And while a precise timeline cannot be pre-determined, it is safe to say that this does not go on forever; and that a solution approach should produce measurable results in a brief period.
The basic approach to therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Theory more commonly referred to as CBT. The basic idea of CBT is that one’s perception and experience are cognitively mediated, that is to say, how someone thinks affects what they do and how they feel. We all have core beliefs that influence our view of the world and how we are expected to perform and behave according to that belief. These beliefs develop (and are maintained) through experience and oftentimes unintentionally influence our behaviors that keep us from achieving a more satisfying life. Through CBT approaches, many of these beliefs can be challenged and adjusted (reframed) to produce better results. By changing our thinking we can change our behaviors and feelings and enjoy less stressful lives. This approach has proven to be the most effective form of therapy experienced by so many people. It is hoped that clients will experience similar results.
