What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

John has been working with adults, children and adolescents from different countries and backgrounds for more than 30 years. He has helped his clients address a variety of life problems including depression, substance abuse, grief and loss, and recovery from sexual and physical abuse. John is a licensed professional counselor in both Virginia and Wisconsin and is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Assistant in Virginia. He received his Master s degree from San Diego State University, where he participated in a counseling program focused on multiculturalism and social justice. He uses his skills of listening, of dialogue, and of exploration to help them understand themselves, their issues and their choices in new ways. While he is always open to many approaches, he has found that most of the problems that hold us back are our own thoughts and judgements, and strives to help move them with caring, understanding and honest reflection. John recognizes that you are the expert of your experience. He welcomes the chance to help you, without judgement or preconditions, to recognize and celebrate your uniqueness and to move forward in life.
