What does a first session with you look like?
Our first session will typically run a full 60 minutes. We'll spend time reviewing your intake paperwork together. I'll take time to review informed consent, what it means, and answer any questions you may have, about any paperwork or processes. I'll invite you to share what your hopes and goals for counseling are, and what mental health wellness mean for/you. We'll work together to create a plan for treatment, which will include an estimate of number of sessions, and for how long. The first session can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. That's totally normal. However, it's important that you feel safe & comfortable with your therapist, so that no fears of possible shame or embarrassment prevent you from opening up fully. I encourage you to give it 3 sessions.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I'm trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) (uses EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and offer these specific methods for treating trauma in those ages 14+. I'm also trained in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and will often utilize for those struggling with substance use, eating disorders, or relationship concerns. My approach is generally integrative of Solution-focused, (which doesn't ignore problems), as well as existentialism and phenomenology. Purpose and acceptance. However, I often incorporate ACT and DBT interventions, as they are also evidence based, and compliment well.
