What does a first session with you look like?

After your first session, you can expect to know more about me and my approach to counseling. Together we will decide what you want out of therapy and what to focus on in each session. Your direction and goals are not set in stone; you can decide to change or add to your goals at any time. As we move forward, we will check in on your goals to see how you are progressing, making changes if necessary to create success. After working together for a while, you decide if more sessions are warranted. My job is not to have a lifelong client. My job is to give you the tools to take away to help you have lifelong happiness.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I am a genuine, non-judgmental, and empathic counselor. My primary foundation is family systems therapy as from birth we depend on others for better or worse, and we can be genetically predisposed to mental health issues. SFT (solution-focused therapy) is high on my list of utilization. SFT caters to "I only get four sessions" clients as we would focus on how to solve a problem more than the feelings associated with it. I also lean on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), a helpful approach when thoughts or actions are causing concern. Last but certainly not least, I utilize EMDR (when appropriate). Tools and techniques from these therapies include genograms, journaling, worksheets, and thought/behavior tracking. I also borrow tools from other therapies, such as "the empty chair" of Gestalt.
