What does a first session with you look like?

My goal is to help you to define the problems that are plaguing you, and to help you to make, set, and achieve goals that will work toward your better functioning self. Many people get overwhelmed by their issues and just kind of drift along through life without living their best life. I will help by giving you a safe place to explore what is troubling you, and to work with you to use me as a mooring so that you can experience a smoother way of approaching things...things that you and I have prepared you for ahead of time. It takes time to make lasting change. Every session is a new session and we build upon what we did before to help solidify your gains.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

With that in mind I will begin our sessions by gathering background information that will show me where your "nest" is, and who supports you when things are going poorly. Or well. (-: My overall approach is that of Family Systems Theory. This means that I gather family of origin information from you, as well as the outer systems that you engage in such as school, work, church, other organizations that you may be part of in your larger environment. This might sound like a lot to "download", but it goes quickly and is immensely helpful. If you imagine a target with you in the center and your family as the next outer ring, that will give you an idea of how I approach things. What happens in one of your rings. spreads ripples back and forth impacting the various rings.
