What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. I applaud you for making the decision to undertake the journey to a better quality of life with counseling support and guidance and look forward to joining with you to explore and discover new possibilities.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Karen Jacobs-White is a Licensed Professional Counselor, dual credentialed in both Mental Health Counseling and Substance Use Disorders Counseling. She has over 20+ years of experience in the mental health field. Karen has worked in community mental health systems throughout the U.S. as a therapist (both inpatient and outpatient), Clinic Manager, Substance Abuse Treatment Director, and Clinical Supervisor. During that time, she has assisted clients in finding the tools to manage a wide spectrum of life stressors and crises, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, mood disorders, personal and family transitions, relationship issues, trauma, and substance use disorders. In addition, she has worked with other special populations to include dual diagnosed MH/DD clients, incarcerated felons, and as a liaison to Drug and Family Courts. The last 11 years of Karen's career pre-COVID were spent as a Military and Family Life Counselor based primarily at Ft. Knox, KY. Having been a Military Spouse for 24 years, she is acutely aware of (and understands) the complex challenges faced by members of the military and their families. Her approach to therapy is client-centered and gentle, yet practical and straightforward. Although she does not believe that one type of therapy or anything else fits all, she generally finds that cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) provide an efficient and effective way of challenging and replacing old thoughts, ideas, and behaviors that may be causing and/or adding to emotional discomfort and may also be hindering a positive relationship with self, others, and the world around us. Finding a therapist to assist you on your journey who is a good fit can be no small feat. It would be Karen's pleasure to assist you in finding the tools that can help manage your stress, finding positive ways of facilitating real, lasting change, and achieving personal growth. "The pandemic s effects on each of us individually and as a society have challenged us on so many levels. The use of Telehealth however has made it possible for clients to continue their personal growth through therapy from the comfort of their own homes. Please know that your comfort is my priority and both face-to-face and telehealth will remain available as an option even as we remerge and re-engage publicly. I m looking forward to working with you!" says Karen.
