What does a first session with you look like?
I am a friendly, happy, person and have a great sense of humor. I can be serious and intense when the situation calls for it. Parents have shared "You tell it like it is, and we like that." I can be bold, plain spoken, and upfront in session, particularly with adolescents. I educate, explain, and welcome questions. I have had parents question a plan of care and ask why I am doing something a certain way. I am happy to share why and discuss it. This is a parent's right and I highly recommend it be done. If you do not ask, you do not know. A child/teen's care should be understood and the parent consents to it. With teens, I will offer to talk separately with them and their parent(s) and then together.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
Any medication treatment recommended is evidence-based. Meaning it has been proven to work in this age group/population as safe and effective and effective for this diagnosis. I utilize therapeutic involvement/interventions during the sessions to help with healing. I use methods from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Interpersonal therapy.
