What does a first session with you look like?

Perhaps I can address any concerns you may have by sharing my expectations when working with clients.  I expect the development of a psychotherapeutic relationship based on mutual trust, respect, and collaboration.  I will depend on you to tell me what is working and what is not as helpful.  I value your feedback and will use it to make any necessary changes in our treatment strategies.  During the first session, we will spend time gathering information about you.  I will be asking you about your mental health history, what you want to get out of therapy, family background,  any military history, trauma history, what it was like for you growing up, and what will change in your life look like.  In subsequent sessions, we will develop treatment goals, objectives and outcome measures to address how to increase your adaptive coping skills and strengths.   I like to share with you the effects of your condition and of issues we are dealing with on the body; to help you learn about your symptoms and how to manage them. I will also share information on how your condition affects the neurochemistry of the brain and neural pathways. I will be sending you worksheets, helpful tips, and other resources.  They will be used to help us focus on specific issues such as teaching you new adaptive coping skills and helping you to identify symptoms and triggers.
