What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I haven’t always dreamed of being a therapist, but I have always wanted to help others. My initial passion was to become a physical therapist, motivated by my own life experiences. However, as I explored the extensive schooling and various subjects involved, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. This led me to consider social work, where I discovered my true passion for advocacy and support. What inspires me most to pursue therapy is witnessing my family members struggle with mental illness. Many of them are reluctant to seek the help they need, often due to the stigma surrounding mental health in the Black community. I felt a strong urge to be a voice not only for my family but for the Black community and other marginalized groups. My goal is to promote change and encourage those who come after me to seek the help they deserve without fear.
What does success look like in therapy? How will a client know that they are making progress?
Success in therapy looks different for everyone; it truly depends on individual struggles and journeys. Some success stories I’ve witnessed in my clients include overcoming depression and anxiety, which allows them to engage in activities that bring joy back into their lives. Others have learned to reframe negative thoughts into positive ones and explore past traumas as a crucial step in their healing process. I’ve heard many success stories from clients whose lives I’ve made a difference in.
What do you think is the biggest barrier today for people seeking care?
One of the biggest barriers people face when seeking care is not knowing what resources are available in their area, or the unfortunate reality that there may be no resources at all. Cost can also be a significant factor; many find therapy services unaffordable. That’s why at Modern Mystics, we offer various payment options to ensure that no one is denied the help they need. Another challenge is finding a therapist with whom one can connect. I strive to create a down-to-earth atmosphere that feels safe and nonjudgmental. Perhaps the most significant barrier is the stigma surrounding therapy. Many people fear that seeking help is a sign of weakness or something to be ashamed of. I’m here to change that narrative. Therapy is not a bad thing; in fact, it’s a positive step towards working through life’s challenges with professional support. We all need someone to help us navigate our journeys, and therapy can be a vital resource for personal growth. By engaging in this process, you can become a better version of yourself. So why not take that step?

This philosophy drives her work as a voice for her clients, ensuring they're heard and supported. Having witnessed family members struggle to seek help, Kimberly is dedicated to breaking down barriers to mental health care. She strives to make a positive impact, drawing upon her own experiences to empower others. A couple of her goals include but are not limited to providing individuals with appropriate care and resources needed for their well-being and touching the lives of others. As a clinician, Kimberly knows doing this requires establishing rapport with clients and receiving all the experience to make her a great clinician. Kimberly believes in the importance of meeting people where they are at and believes that the client is their own experts in their mental health journey. She provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment where the client feels free to discuss whatever concerns are on their mind.
