What does a first session with you look like?
Initially, our focus will be on establishing rapport as we build a therapeutic alliance in order to get down to the very serious business of improving your mental health. We'll start by focusing on what has brought you to treatment, and I'll be gathering information on your family, social, and psychological history to gain a clearer sense of who you are, where you've been in life, and in what direction you'd like to go from here. As a client-centered therapist, I want you to feel in control of what you wish to discuss during your sessions. At the beginning of each session, I'll ask you what you'd like to focus on, and we'll begin from there. As our sessions unfold, we'll establish some longer-range goals aimed at more effective symptom management and improved mood and daily functioning.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I am an eclectic therapist, meaning I'm open to using different theoretical approaches based on what seems most appropriate for your specific needs. I do heavily tend to utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy as I firmly believe our thoughts directly impact our feelings and behaviors and can serve to negatively or positively impact mood, functioning, and outlook. I'm always on the lookout for maladaptive thoughts that may not be serving you well, and will seek to help you adopt a healthier thought process aimed at producing the life you want. As a spiritual and philosophical person myself, I'm here to help you explore any issues pertaining to questions about life's meaning, your values/beliefs, and any struggles you may be having spiritually that are impacting your mental health as well.
