What does a first session with you look like?

The most important component to therapy is the therapeutic relationship between you and the therapist. Different therapists have different ways of delivering therapy skills. Finding one you can connect with where you feel supported, safe, and comfortable are essential in the therapeutic relationship. The experience of the initial assessment and continuing sessions are different. The initial contact is more formal consisting of questions to help me understand what brings you to therapy, past treatments, family history, identifying your goals, and creating a treatment plan on how to meet your needs. I will check in with you at the conclusion of our initial session to ensure we are a good therapeutic match. Continuing sessions focus more on teamwork as we explore your symptoms, understand how your symptoms influence your life and behaviors, and apply methods and tools to help you overcome your struggles. To respect you as an individual, sessions will vary from person to person. For some, they like to be challenged to promote growth, while others prefer a more gentle and slower paced approach. Your sessions will be tailored to meet your specific needs and therapeutic desires to ensure the correct methods and tools are applied to assist you.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I use various evidenced-based methods dependent on your identified needs. They include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused, Life Coaching, and Strengths-Based. Various tools I use are providing homework, journaling, completing handouts, providing psychoeducation, and mindfulness (mind, body, spirit). The treatment methods and tools for you will be decided based on your identified needs.
