What does a first session with you look like?

You will be heard. I will work hard to be sure I see things through your eyes. I will be sure to spend the last moments of our session summarizing what we talked about and decompressing, getting into a mindset to face the rest of your day. If “homework” works for you, I have great exercises and worksheets. Before becoming a therapist I worked in the arts, so I often come back to a next session with a story, painting, or video to share with you that reminds me of what we spoke about. I find sometimes art can say what we can’t.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I have learned to see clients in context, and do not wonder “what is wrong with you,” but rather “what happened to you.” This approach is sometimes called person-centered and trauma-informed. I focus on building a genuine relationship, providing unconditional positive regard and empathy. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as narrative therapy and mindfulness. In some cases, clients have had something specific to work on, which responded to a behavioral approach and motivational interviewing. Whatever the approach, it develops as we work together. I may propose some intake forms or assessments in the future but I prefer not to send them ahead of time. Setting up the first appointment can be a big step, and we will come up with a plan together when we meet.
