What does a first session with you look like?

First we'll nail down what you want to change and why. Then we'll look for more ways to apply your strengths more effectively. Soon, you'll be solving problems and breaking free of the patterns that make you miserable. Next we'll explore the situation that brought you to therapy, identifying the big and little decisions that have deep roots into your past. We'll probably discover a surprising connection between issues that seem to have nothing to do with each other. As you progress, you'll notice the fog starting to lift. The more you learn to cope realistically with the things that have been holding your happiness prisoner, the more room you'll have for genuine joy, delight, and hope. From here, we'll focus more and more on growing into a prosperous, fulfilling, and meaningful life.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I work very hard to tailor my methods and tools to you. I emphasize teaching awareness-raising techniques, sharing skills for improving emotional intelligence and impulse control, embracing radical acceptance, and practicing new ways to maintain personal boundaries with confidence. Some benefit from a focus on insecure attachment styles or values clarification. Others from conscious reframing of daily speaking and thought habits. Where appropriate, the most current brain-based and Buddhist-influenced approaches are applied. Outside of treatment times, clients may be encouraged to take part in specific experiences, practice new skills, keep a guided journal or log of target behaviors, read or research relevant topics, have long overdue conversations with people in their life.
