What does a first session with you look like?

Everything on the internet wants your attention, “Look at this advertisement!” they scream, “Watch this politically influencing video!” So many bells and whistles every time you turn the thing on! There is actually nothing more valuable than your attention. Bring your attention to attention! New neuropathways are created by the combination of attention, time, and repetition, sort of like working out is to your muscles, attention is to your neuropathways. It is the energy and impulse of synaptic transmission and chemical messaging that constructs transmission of body sensation to thought and the unconscious messages of chemical feedback loops. You can create new pathways in your brain by using them. You use them with attention. They wither away from a lack of attention.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

You can change old pathways of intrusive negative thought, emotional and physical pain by not using them. But automatic and intrusive imply you are not thinking old dysfunctional thoughts intentionally, just habitually. I trust you are not trying to feel bad. Here is the catch and paradox of doing this alone. Psychotherapy can help. Emotional dysregulation can be a real obstacle to your efforts to change your automatic negative thoughts. Emotional distress, anxiety and depression can actually inhibit your ability to learn. Too many people were never soothed well or taught emotional self-regulation skills as children. Sympathetic nervous system activation directs your energy away from executive functioning brain parts, and towards the amygdala, limbic system and survival behaviors.
