What does a first session with you look like?
The first session is all about creating rapport, hearing about what is working well, what is not, and building a treatment plan with goals that are measurable and attainable. Subsequent sessions will focus on working on defining steps to meet the desired goals and examining impediments to reaching said goals. Key client strengths will be identified and utilized to work through impairments. The client will know therapy is complete when the desired goals have been met and/or previous impairments in functioning have been minimized or eliminated.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
Treatment methods vary depending on the needs of the client; in other words, I am client-centered and strengths-focused in my orientation. Often, cognitive-behavioral tools are utilized to help improve functioning and to help the client become aware of the strengths they possess and how those strengths can be uncovered and maximized. Many times, an exploration of the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors is useful in helping the client become more aware of the choices they have available in their lives and why they come to make those choices. I have many different interventions that I have created and honed over the years to help in the process of becoming a more active participant in one's life.
