What does a first session with you look like?
Clients can expect to feel like they have someone who is truly invested in their well-being. I like to invite clients to try mindfulness or self-compassion exercises both in and out of sessions to increase their awareness and help them build new skills. I try to offer developmentally appropriate resources and information that can help clients develop insight into what is happening in their brains and bodies. With child and family work, I focus on helping us create a sense of safety in order to strengthen relationships and open up communication channels. Previous clients have shared that they appreciated my ability to help them slow down and learn more about the mind-body connection. Clients tend to come away from sessions feeling supported and less alone.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
My approach is warm, strengths-based, playful, and trauma-informed. I strive to practice antiracism personally and professionally and to be an ally to LGBTQIA+ communities. Above all, I aim to co-create a safe space with clients so they can feel seen and heard and continue building resilience. I draw from various therapeutic styles and focus on meeting clients where they are. I tend to provide psychoeducation about the brain and trauma. I incorporate mindfulness, distress tolerance, and somatic exercises for clients who are comfortable with them. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and use those tools as well. For parent/child work, I use select tools from interpersonal neurobiology, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and play therapy techniques.
