What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. As a child of immigrant parents (both from different countries), I understand some of the challenges that families face as they adjust to a new culture and different generations.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Mary Lou Macarius is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, grief, parenting issues, school issues, stress, women's issues, and child therapy. She has more than 20 years of experience, working at institutions such as the Pacific Lutheran University Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, the Good Samaritan Behavioral Health Care Center, as well as in public schools serving students K-12th grade. She also has experience serving individuals from six years old to 65 years old from her time in another group private practice. Mary Lou received her education from Eastern Washington University and Pacific Lutheran University and she is a clinical member of The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. She utilizes multiple treˇ˛atment approaches including solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, structural family therapy, and others to best support clients. Mary Lou helps clients find changes that can be made to help them function more effectively, look at the solutions and strengths that clients already have for coping with problems, and builds on the client s successes. She also likes to support clients by focusing on changing the way they see life and their problems when the situations cannot be changed. Mary Lou is a trauma survivor and comes from an immigrant family, both of which influence the work that she does on a day-to-day basis. This, along with her clinical experience, allows her to support and understand her clients in unique ways!
