Under Clinical Supervision

Melissa Kohberger, Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, 37AC00572400 is practicing under the supervision of Nicole Cowan (New Jersey, LPC, 3700657400) at Resilience Lab.

Please, note: A clinician listed as being “clinically supervised” is completing clinical hours toward their licensure. They have one or more fully licensed clinical supervisors that often have special training to become supervisors. They consult with their supervisor(s) on all of their cases, which means that, when working with them, you are getting the time and expertise of multiple therapists in your treatment.

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I grew up in a small rural town where I always felt a little bit different. Because of this experience, I developed an ability to hold space for people who feel isolated or lost, which contributed to my decision to pursue therapy. Then, when I moved to Brooklyn, New York, I wanted to immerse myself in a completely different environment. I decided to live in a youth hostel in a difficult neighborhood where I saw the effects of systemic oppression on mental health first hand. It was such a formative experience that it ultimately led to where I am today.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

All of us have an inner voice—that “gut feeling” that connects us to our instincts, our unconscious, and the emotional side of our personalities. But with the hectic, conflicting demands of the modern world, many of us lose touch with our inner voice, which can lead to anxiety, insecurity, and disconnection. When it comes to overcoming mental health challenges, tapping into your instincts and inner knowing is a great place to start. As a therapist, I work with clients to connect with their intuition, feel confident in their identity, and gain practical skills for navigating life. Therapy with me is a collaborative process where I empower you to be your truest, rawest, and most genuine self. In our time together, you’ll learn to trust your gut and honor your inner knowing, while learning how to manage difficult emotions, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and create a life that aligns with your values. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we’ll address the patterns that separate you from your inner voice and create a new way of being that embraces your full, authentic self.

What are your biggest strengths as a therapist?

I create a warm, welcoming space where people feel comfortable quickly. My natural inclination to listen and empathize makes it feel safe for clients to open up, practice vulnerability, and be fully themselves. Depending on the situation, I can weave humor into session to bring a sense of lightheartedness into the healing process. The container I create is warm, but firm. I’m not afraid to challenge my clients because I believe that strong boundaries facilitate growth.

Work History

My mental health career began at an addiction treatment facility in Brooklyn. After that, I moved into a community mental health setting, where I worked with children, teens, and adults experiencing trauma, mood, personality, and substance use disorders. I’m now a proud member of the Resilience Lab mental health collective—the largest community of clinicians working collaboratively to produce better outcomes and improve mental health access.
