The counselor/client dynamic is one that only thrives through candor, trust, and safety. Communication about your goals, comfort-levels, and what you may or may not be ready to explore is all you need to bring to the session. The work we do cannot be done at my pace- only yours. It is my privilege to work with clients who trust me with the most vulnerable aspects of their self and their lives. Being able to celebrate with clients in milestones that lead them back to wellness is an honor that reverberates each time I watch a client realize how far they have come.

Meeting the client where they are at, in order to fully collaborate on a treatment plan, towards meeting goals is at the core of my intent as a counselor. Each client has their own personal definition of and relationship with wellness. It is my duty to respect the client’s perspective on what wellness is for them. I do not have answers for the client, instead I have the tools necessary to begin and maintain a conversation with the client that has the potential to foster the client’s own personal insight through their own narrative. These tools, combined with my experience and knowledge-base guide clients towards their own answers. This is done to protect a client’s autonomy so that they may continue to live within their own truth(s). This means “the work” is different for everyone and the amount of energy and time devoted to wellness varies with every individual client.
