Your personal comfort and emotional safety is so very important to me. I truly believe that the most important aspect of counseling is the therapeutic relationship. It’s my hope that our times together would be free of shame and judgement, and that you would have the freedom to express yourself and explore the issues that have brought you to this point. During the initial session, we will discuss what brings you to be seeking out therapy (present symptoms/struggles, past traumas, family dynamics, etc). From there, we will collaboratively discuss treatment plan goals and practical steps we will work on to help you achieve those goals. This may include simple homework assignments to be thinking about outside of therapy sessions.
I like to describe my approach as client-centered and solution-focused (goal-oriented). We will develop treatment goals together and ensure you feel comfortable with our plan. I utilize different modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) during sessions to assist clients in reaching their goals and identifying barriers to their progress. CBT works by challenging negative thoughts and beliefs to yield more healthy emotions and behaviors. Our thoughts dictate our emotions which dictate our behaviors. If we change our unhealthy thought patterns, we can reduce challenging emotional experiences and the negative behaviors that follow. I also utilize mindfulness to assist with the stressors of life and remaining in the present moment.
