What does a first session with you look like?
Counseling is a therapeutic relationship which is similar to a business relationship. You, the client, is an expert on your life and what has happened to you. I, the counselor, am an expert on counseling and what can help you. We will spend most of the first session going over your life history from childhood to the present. The purpose of this first session is so that I, the counselor, can see the world and your problems from your point of view. I firmly believe in the advice that you should not comment on a person's life until you have walked a mile in their shoes. The end of the first session is where I, the counselor, give you the client some feedback. For you to trust the feedback, you need to trust me, and that is our first goal.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I believe in starting out each session with a person-centered perspective, and then once I have learned about your problems and how you see the world, we will go to cognitive, behavioral, analytical, existential, solution focused, acceptance commitment, and dialectic. I pick the tool based on the person, the problem, and your viewpoint of the world. We all see the world differently, so the proper tool has to fit the person and the problem.
