What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. This will enable you to receive the very best care, as a personalized treatment plan will then be developed for subsequent sessions. Thriveworks helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives. Clients are guided and supported as they work through their unique mental health challenges – and, along the way, shown the life-changing power of therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. As an African-American woman, I work hard to acknowledge the challenges faced by people across the Diaspora, address how they cope with those challenges, and strengthen those mechanisms to help increase chances of long-term success.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Rakia Hicks is licensed in North Carolina with 17 years of professional work experience in the mental health field. She has experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, anger management, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, and depression. She believes in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and enjoys working with adolescents, young adults, and the geriatric populations. She strives to tailor dialog and treatment planning to meet clients' unique and specific needs. The training Rakia received in pursuit of a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology with Loyola University of Maryland provided specific coursework in clinical supervision and counselor education. Rakia accumulated a wealth of experience working with acute mentally ill adolescent and adult populations providing suicide assessment, crisis intervention, and intensive individual/family therapy. She also worked with less acute populations providing therapeutic expertise in the areas of grief/loss, trauma work, phase of life problems, anger management, anxiety, and depression. Rakia continues professional development in the areas of trauma and abuse (EMDR) and play therapy, and utilizes dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy. We are living in very trying times. Sometimes, it feels like you have it together but other times, it feels like you are falling apart. At the core of us, we just want some semblance of peace and a little happiness. Doesn't feel like we're asking for much, right? Just know, that you are NOT alone in trying to figure things out and keep your head above water. Rakia is invested in helping you find ways to navigate these twists and turns and develop lasting strategies to overcome life's challenges.
