What does a first session with you look like?

At the initial visit, I will be doing a comprehensive intake about the nature of what brings you to therapy. I will be doing a lot of listening and processing to have a full picture of what is going on. We will also talk through goals that you may want to work on as you engage in the process of therapy. This will give us both an idea of what an effective treatment plan might look like for you as we meet for subsequent sessions. During our sessions, we will explore challenges that you experience, talk through actionable solutions to combat barriers, and tailor interventions that bring us back to your desired outcome. As therapy progresses, you will begin to feel like the strong, capable person you were meant to be as you will have a greater understanding of the strengths that you already possess and recognize those as resources that you can use when experiencing challenges in life.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

In general, the theoretical approach I typically use is Cognitive Behavioral. The premise behind this approach is that the cognitions individuals hold shape how they think, feel, and behave. Some thinking promotes growth and others lead to distress and conflict. My role as a therapist is to help clients identify dysfunctional thinking and behavior that may be impeding growth and find ways to bring about positive change through more productive and healthy thinking patterns and behavioral modifications. I also draw from Solution-Focused Therapy and encourage clients to seek solutions to problems and set up expectations for change. This may include helping individuals change their focus and reframe their situation as well as identify strengths and resources to help meet desired outcomes.
