What does a first session with you look like?

The first session, as with all Thriveworks therapists, will involve talking through your needs and goals for therapy — whether those involve managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or another mental health challenge. What is your style/approach to therapy?

I offer a variety of counseling approaches including CBT / Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems. As a multicultural trauma specialist, I understand the obstacles of feeling whole again.

What should we know about your experiences and background?

Sharena Goosun is a Resident in Counseling with 6 years of counseling experience where she has serviced diverse populations in various settings including the criminal justice sector, residential facilities, community-based services, substance abuse clinics, and clinical mental health settings. She began her counseling career as a youth counselor servicing adolescents with severe mental health and behavioral disorders. She proceeded with her experience as an intensive in-home counselor servicing children/adolescents and families, and as a certified substance abuse counselor supervisee servicing individuals who suffer from various addictions. She has a strong passion for servicing multicultural populations and strives to support others in addressing their barriers to reach their greatest potential. She enjoys working with a wide variety of mental health diagnoses including (but not limited to) depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, child/adolescent ADHD, adjustment disorders, PTSD, and substance abuse, as well as working with individuals hoping to gain healing and clarity into everyday issues. Sharena completed her master s degree in professional counseling from Liberty University. She also earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice at Virginia Commonwealth University. Sharena utilizes an integrative approach specifically designed to meet the needs of each unique individual. Her theoretical philosophy derives from utilizing various psychodynamic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, trauma-informed care, narrative therapy, and strengths-based perspectives. Sharena s outlook on therapy focuses on achieving personal healing from past and recent traumas while redeveloping a positive sense of worth, acceptance, and identity. Life is a reoccurring experience, with no handbook on how to navigate it. Sharena is beyond confident and motivated to assist individuals in regaining their happiness, understanding, and overall healing. She utilizes various methods and techniques to help increase cognitive/emotional processing, coping mechanisms, and clarity.
