What does a first session with you look like?

Dr. Prather applies the power of compassion and understanding with the tenets of cognitive behavioral therapy to help adults and adolescents achieve their best selves. He views therapy as a safe place to explore stress, anxiety, sadness, or loneliness. Regarding work with adults, he believes that people need to feel that someone understands them and has compassion for their struggles - those places where they get in their own way. As such, people not only need help identifying their goals and developing strategies to achieve them, but also an understanding of how dysfunctional thoughts or beliefs can lead to conflict between what they want to do and what they actually do. This treatment approach, along with solution-focused therapy, is the cornerstone of Dr. Prather’s therapy.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

Dr. Prather’s approach to therapy is brief and solution-focused (SF), meaning he works collaboratively with people to identify their goals and develop strategies to achieve them. Coupled with cognitive behavioral therapy, this eclectic treatment approach helps adults find answers to their problems. SF is only interested in what is open to view. The goal is two-fold: to teach people through therapist/client questions how to get out of their own way, and to help people learn how to identify and change their thoughts and behaviors that contribute to mental health struggles. This involves shining a light on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors linked to depression, anxiety, and any other difficulties interfering in a person's daily life.
