What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

Wendy W. Coates is a licensed marriage and family therapist who graduated from the University of California, Irvine, and the University of San Francisco. Wendy began her career in the juvenile justice system providing individual and group therapy to high-risk families. This setting was the foundation for her focus on treating domestic abuse, anger management, and trauma recovery. While living in California, she also worked as a psychiatric social worker providing acute in-patient treatment to individuals with mental illness, and as a family reunification therapist with Child Protective Services. Following her relocation to Northern Virginia in 2005, she began directing and facilitating the Domestic Violence Intervention Program for Loudoun County. Wendy specializes in working with couples and adult individuals. She is an active member of the Virginia Batterer Intervention Program Certification Board and the Loudoun County Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART). She is the author of several treatment workbooks, including: Mindful Workbook for Women, Emotionally Intelligent Anger Management, and EMAP: Emotionally Intelligent Mindful Acceptance-Based Program.
