What does a first session with you look like?

Clients who request me as their counselor will begin to realize their own abilities to identify and address the problems they may have been facing for years. They will learn methods (tools) for addressing and overcoming problems and they will learn skills to use those tools for their own strengthening and empowering. Clients will find a compassionate ear for their problems, but also someone who wants to help them rise above those same problems. I usually give outside reading or other assignments to extend and enhance concepts that benefit the client between sessions.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

As I stated before, I use concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and other modalities and techniques depending on the problems a client is having. I am eclectic in that sense. Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, or REBT, which was developed by Dr. Albert Ellis is probably the part of CBT that I use more than any other modality. I feel especially effective with relationship problems (both at work and personal), anxiety issues, depression, and anger management. I also have several years of experience in working with drug and alcohol counseling, which is very helpful because substance abuse disorders are often co-occurring problems or disorders along with many mental health diagnoses.
