How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?
About half of my clients come in knowing exactly what they are looking for and some just know they need help or that something is wrong. So to some degree we determine goals together. I work with people to help them understand how to put into words what they are looking for in reaching their mental health goals.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Therapy may change your life! It has the possibility of helping a person address painful issues that may be keeping them from truly experiencing a fulfilling and satisfying life. I have so many come in thinking therapy probably won't work but then completely change their minds even after one or two sessions.
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
One of the number one things people tell me is "you're easy to talk to". My laid back and non threatening personality seem to make it easier for clients to bring up difficulty without feeling pressured. I seem to get many people who have tried therapy before with bad experiences but have mentioned finally feeling listened to and comfortable opening up. I've noticed the more comfortable clients feel the easier it is for them to address difficulty issues.

Work History
I have worked in many settings helping children, youth, men, women, couples, and families for over 20 years. Before becoming a therapist I worked in a ministry setting for close to 15 years. The last 5 years have been specifically focused on helping individuals, families, and couples reach their life goals through mental health therapy. The focus of many of my sessions include understanding triggers to difficult emotions, finding healthy ways to cope with challenges, building self esteem, conflict resolution, learning to communicate more affectively, etc.
