What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I often say the field chose me- I did not choose it! While in college taking Psychology classes, I realized my love for working with others so I decided to go all the way and I became a counselor instead of a psychologist.
My second job was working with victims of domestic violence which appealed to me due to me witnessing the violence a family member endured at the hands of her husband. Now I work in homeless services with persons experiencing trauma, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and/or mental health concerns.
I find joy in working with diverse populations.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
I would tell anyone that therapy is about YOU! You are the expert on your life. My job is to walk with you and help you along the way- not to make decisions for or be judgmental. Think of me as your biggest fan rooting for you!
What does a first session with you look like?
Getting to know you! I will open the floor for you to share important information about yourself and answer any question you may have about me. It’s definitely about building rapport and setting the foundation of our counseling relationship.
