What does a first session with you look like?

The first session can be nerve wrecking for a first time client. It is really about us getting to know each other and building rapport. Almost think of it as a first date. I will share with you a little bit about my background. I will allow you to ask me any questions before we get to start. Once we finish with the familiarities, we dive in. There will be times that I may ask a lot of questions, but it is for me to learn more about you.

What impact did the scope and/or focus of your education have on your current work as a therapist?

Currently, I am working on my Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Walden University. Since starting the program, I have seen that access to mental health services is limited. As many counselors are trained and ready to help individuals, clients have limited access to the needed help. It is one of the many reasons I started working in community-based agencies. Clients were able to receive services due to their income. I felt I was able to help on a larger scale when I worked in that setting. While it was challenging work, it prepared me to start my private practice and work with a range of diagnoses and backgrounds.

What would be important for someone to know about working with you?

I like to share with my clients that I have my stuff I am working on too. I am not perfect, and that is ok. Everyone who has ever gone through a trying time knows that you will not go through it ideally. But it is important to learn from those mistakes and take the right steps moving forward. I always want my clients to know that I thrive on having a non-judgmental and positive atmosphere. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible because you already took the most challenging step of signing up for counseling.

Work History

I worked in Mental Health Rehab (MHR) (community-based agencies) since receiving my Master's in 2013 from Southeastern Louisiana University. I received my LPC in August 2015 and became an LPC-S in August 2018. I am currently working on her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Walden University. In my previous jobs, I served as Wraparound Facilitator, Mental Health Professional (MHP), providing individual and family counseling services to the client in their homes, school, and community. As a Clinical Manager, I provided clinical supervision and training to non-licensed staff. As a Utilization Manager, I reviewed outpatient behavioral health requests from providers credentialed with the Managed Care Organizations. I experience opening satellite offices of already established MHRs. I have developed training manual and facilitated several mandated trainings. I have been through several credentialing processes, such as CARF and Louisiana MCOs. I have been through surveys conducted by the MCOs and ensuring the agency was up to standards during the survey.
