Education
University of Georgia, Doctorate of Philosophy, Counseling Psychology, 1983 — My most helpful experience was an intensive internship in Rational Behavioral Therapy with Dr. Maultsby, Jr. His approach to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was educational. In the first session, I am almost always able to assist clients to see that facts and events do not create our feelings; it's what we tell ourselves. For example, a football game that "bummed you out" did not, in fact, create the bummed out feeling. Think about it, 50% of the people leave the game feeling happy. The football game does not create the feeling. Another example: If I've worked hard to teach someone a game and they finally beat me, I may well feel happy. Even losing, does not create the feeling of "bummed out". We can learn to "catch our stories" just like we learn to hear and not say certain cuss words.
