If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Therapy can initially be intimidating for many people until they discover that it is a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings free of judgment with the security of knowing that what is said will be kept confidential. Therapists are people who have experienced struggles and challenges in their own lives and often therapists are also engaged in therapy because no one has to struggle alone.
In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
I have had many painful experiences and emotional struggles throughout my life and this increased my ability to relate and empathize with my clients. I believe in the therapeutic process because I have personally experienced the benefits of participating in therapy.
What do you view as a key component of the therapeutic relationship?
A strong therapeutic relationship starts with developing trust. As a therapist, I believe it is important to treat everyone with respect, be compassionate, and engage in honest communication. In addition, providing a non-judgmental relationship allows clients to feel comfortable discussing difficult experiences, thoughts, and feelings..
