What excites you most about the evolving mental health landscape?

In many ways, Covid-19 brought mental health treatment and accessibility issues to the forefront. The transition to and accessing of providers from telehealth platforms, from the comfort of the clients' own home forever changed how society viewed seeking help. There has been more publicity on the state of society's mental health now than ever before.

In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?

I was in the Army before I was married and then met the father of my children and was a military spouse for many years. This dynamic allowed me to understand the depth of war trauma and the often unseen sacrifice. I have a passion working with veterans and their family members. My travels with the military and working in a rural school district with a high migrant field worker and Native American population provided a therapeutic foundation of cultural sensitivity. Not everyone has the same upbringing and understanding the whole person and their value system has allowed me to establish strong therapeutic alliances.

In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?

My outgoing personality, humor and humility often make clients feel at ease from the very first session. The therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect in creating a true client centered treatment plan. Clients feel empowered when the therapeutic alliance is founded in sound connections; so many topics are difficult to tell a "stranger" but the more trusting and solid the foundation, the easier it becomes.
