Find a Therapist for ADHD

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is among the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders and features a pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning or development.

While typically identified in childhood, ADHD’s characteristics can be observed throughout typical childhood development. In order to meet the criteria for diagnosis, ADHD symptoms must be present for at least 6 months and significantly impact academic, social, and adaptive abilities.

While individuals with ADHD are often impacted throughout their lives, symptoms can be managed with behavior therapy and/or medication.

Treating ADHD

Treatment for adult ADHD often involves doctors and psychiatric medication management providers prescribing ADHD medication, but they usually prefer patients also try non-medication interventions like behavior therapy.

Treatment for ADHD in children includes stimulants and non-stimulant medications, behavioral therapy, and neurofeedback, among other things. A child’s treatment plan will be based on a thorough evaluation by their healthcare provider, who checks for core symptoms, comorbid conditions, and the parent’s goals for the child.

Therapy for ADHD

Therapy for ADHD usually tries to address executive dysfunction in order to correct symptoms like difficulty planning, meeting deadlines, forgetting things, outbursts, and being late. The most common and effective therapies for ADHD are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Working with a psychotherapist is a great way to look at what you can and cannot control on your own, with or without the aid of medications. Psychotherapy is more intensive and specific to individual needs than what prescribing doctors can do with ADHD medications.
